Internet Photonics Delivering Carrier-Grade Optical Ethernet Today
About Us

Editor's Note

Internet Photonics, formerly a Bell Labs spinout, was acquired by Ciena in 2004. In 2006, the original headquarters in Shrewsbury, NJ was closed and the majority of the team disbanded. This page was resurrected in 2024 for posterity and runs on eBower Infrastructure.

Internet Photonics

Internet Photonics, Inc. is the first company to deliver carrier-grade Optical Ethernet and wavelength solutions that simplify networking and provide a compelling economic model for service delivery. Our best-of-breed family of products allow cable operators and service providers to quickly and simply deploy Optical Ethernet and WDM (wave division multiplexing) networks to deliver profitable new services.

The company is fast becoming an important player in both the cable and telco markets. Internet Photonics generates revenue from six different cable operators and is the market leader in next-generation VOD transport with over 4.5 million homes passed (that's 20% of the market based on industry analyst numbers). In addition to its six cable customers, Internet Photonics has two telco customers who are using its products to deliver new managed wavelength services from their existing networks (unlike other next-gen SONET or Ethernet players whose business model requires major network upgrades).

Employees from Internet Photonics include 100 of the most renowned development experts located in two regional areas known for their expertise in optical and data networking. 10 PhDs are current on staff, five of which are founders who started the company as a spin out from Lucent's Bell Labs in October 2000 in New Jersey. They developed the critical core technology that was devised to radically simplify networking in both the cable and telco markets.

The founders and key development staff in New Jersey have been complemented and were joined by key data development veterans from the Boston area to build the core technology into a line of seven products. Together these teams have delivered a family of solutions that help network operators deploy networks capable of generating significant revenue and immediate profitability from next generation Optical Ethernet and wavelength services.

Established and emerging service providers can now generate new revenues by quickly deploying Optical Ethernet services while reducing both capital and operating costs. Internet Photonics is changing the playing field for Optical Ethernet by offering carrier-grade solutions that deliver the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of Ethernet in the enterprise network with the availability levels demanded in Metro networks.
